I just finished this wonderfully funny book. I read it on my Kindle and was bummed when I finished. I immediately searched my house for Big Money, the second adventure of Austin Carr the endearing, wacky, and off the wall stock broker. He always has money problems and of course there are misadventures with his supposed friends, employees, and bosses.
As I was reading this I thought about early Robert Crais and Elvis Cole. The similarities were favorable and the pleasure that Big Numbers provided were every bit on par with Crais and his books.
I recommend that you buy all of the Austin Carr books, starting with this book and reading straight through. Do not forget to buy the most recent adventure Big Shoes, available as we speak.

Such a good book, keep my interest and hard to put down. Looking forward to seeing your next book come out,
Stockbroker Austin Carr is about to be killed in a most unusual way, he’s strapped into a deep-sea fishing rig, trussed and helpless, and about to be dragged to a watery grave by a giant bluefin tuna. In what’s also a somewhat unusual technique, the author, without identifying Carr’s assailant, flashes back three weeks and takes the reader through the events leading up to this in media res opening.

The reader learns that Carr’s wise mouth and often questionable choices during this time has created a rather long list of people who might want him dead, and it’s only as one approaches the last third of the book that the identity of the would-be killer becomes apparent, from which point, the story proceeds to a fairly satisfying conclusion.

Big Numbers by Jack Getze is the premiere offering in a mystery series about a wise-cracking stockbroker who can’t stay out of trouble, and who is just one step away from being a ‘broke’ stockbroker. The main character is flawed, and all too human, thus loveable, and the setting adds to the story.

An entertaining story. I give it four stars.
I've been doing an experiment. I download the most promising free ebook thrillers from BookBub and then I check them out to see if there's a method to the marketing madness of offering them for free. Most so far have been losers -- stiffly written by omniscient third-person narrators attempting to avoid the spoiler factor of showing by the mere fact of publication that the protagonist-narrator has survived whatever mayhem his enemies had in store for him. Big Numbers represents a refreshing exception. The voice of protagonist Austin Carr comes thorough as distinctly New Jersey tough and funny at the same time. Even though we know that in the end he'll defeat the bad guys (or, rather, worse guys; he's no angel himself), there's plenty of suspense watching how he manages to do that. In the comic thriller genre, Getze ranks right up there with my previous favorites Collin Piprell and Carl Hiaasen. Thanks to this find, I'll keep checking out the free thrillers even as I pay real money for Getze's second book.
Lots of twists and turns. I felt like I was on the best roller coaster. I never saw the ending coming. I loved it.
Austin Carr is a stockbroker - of sorts - and a not very good one. He is also a father, and apparently good at that, if only his ex-wife would let him within hugging distance of his kids. Well she will, but only after he pays a huge back child-support bill, and since he is a stockbroker and not a very good one, that is a real sticking point.

But he is determined and loves his kids enough to get hooked, by a gorgeous redhead, into a crooked scheme. But even before he collects a cent he is battered, run over, and shot at, not everyone loves Austin Carr, although he does become pretty friendly with the staff at the local hospital.
I am a sucker for books that have sarcastic and/or sardonic protagonists so Austin Carr had me hooked from the first page. In places the book is laugh-out-loud funny. The violence isn't too graphic and while there is a little foul language, not many people confine themselves to the gee-willikers brand of speech - not the kind of people I want to read about anyway.

Looking forward to Carr's next adventure - just hope his insurance premium is paid.
Nice story with unexpected twists and turns. Stayed up all night to read the whole thing. A stockbroker gets the ride of his life when he decides to step over the line, getting cozy with his biggest client's wife and change his Lufkin life.. Big surprises!
Snarky mystery. Stand-alone will plenty of action and surprise ending.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Humorous dialogue.
