The Demonists A Demonists Novel Thomas E Sniegoski 9780451473523 Books
Having read most of Thomas' work, I was looking forward to this release from the moment I found out it was headed our way.The author, for those of you who aren't familiar with him is intimately familiar with the celestial mechanics of Heaven, Angels (both above and below), demons and every beast in between. He is the author of the Fallen and the Remy Chandler series...and if you haven't read those, you've a real treat in front of you if you decide to indulge.
This...the first book in a new series...starts off with a bang and keeps up the excitement thru to the very end.
Typically, character development goes one of two ways in a first book. It's either heavy handed - giving us WAY to much - or on the light side hoping to fill in the blanks in subsequent volumes. Sniegoski has a deft hand at balancing the two and delivers the right amount to really get you invested into the new characters with just enough held back so you're not really sure who the main protagonists of this series are going to be. **Sorry - NO SPOLIERS HERE*
If you want to lose yourself in a story that will take you to all the highs and lows of excitement, this one is for you!!
Don't pass it up!!!

The Demonists A Demonists Novel Thomas E Sniegoski 9780451473523 Books Reviews
A bit different than Sniegoski's normal writings but just as thrilling if not a little more dark. Great characters that you can't help admiring.
A fast reading demon fest with pretty decent characters. Loved the way the Demonists controlled the demons! As a practicing Wiccan, I know how much power signs and sigils have and this novel really brings that out. I think that this will be a fun series to read and am looking forward to the next book!
I am really enjoying this series so far. While I miss my favorite Angel Remy, TES' has begun a suitable replacement for adventures.
The world inhabited by John Fogg, Theodora, and the rest of the cast herein felt immediately fleshed out to me within the first chapter. A testament to Mr. Sniegoski's writing skill. The book is fast paced but doesn't fail to deliver on characterization. Some tender moments interspersed among some truly dark scenes. Again, a nod to Sniegoski's craft. Just when I thought he couldn't top himself, he produces this gem. Thank you, sir! I heartily recommend this book to all interested in dark fantasy and cannot wait for Book 2!
I have read much of Thomas Sneigoski's work before and this stands with the best. It starts with a bang and never slows down. The characters and world, both well developed, are fascinating. Best of all, this seems to only be the beginning.... I, for one, am looking forward to what's to follow.
If you like suspense and the supernatural, this is for you!
From the very first chapter, Thomas Sniegoski sucks you in to a brand new world filled with the dark and demented stuff of nightmares. John Fogg - a paranormal expert - gets pulled into a scheme to unleash Hell on Earth, and along with his medium wife and a determined FBI agent, must cope with a new reality that threatens the very core of humanity. I couldn't put this book down! Just when I thought I'd read the very best Sniegoski could put out, he gives me a brand new Universe to fall in love with!
Can't say I was a big fan; the book reads like a slightly more detailed screenplay of a second rate horror film. Think 'Drag Me To Hell' or 'The Devil Inside.' Things that should be scary fall flat due to poor lead up and repetitive descriptions that don't really tell you anything and don't lend themselves well to reader extrapolation. The demonic entity speaks in a demonic voice. Evil things appear evil. Even as early as chapter three I was feeling my eyes start to glaze over.
It doesn't help that the pacing isn't great. We get a short, bland prologue we didn't need, and then run right into the first B-movie bloodbath. Which leads into a 'monsters are monstrous' nightmare where John gets saved by the ghost of his Nana (Nana is pretty badass though). Which leads into him going to the hospital where his wife showcases the fact that she is possessed by speaking in the 'we are legion' voice of the bad guy and throwing up on him. Trope is complete with maggots. With no meaningful downtime with the characters, you quickly get desensitized to the action scenes.
Sniegoski also uses 700,000 ellipses in this book to try to build tension in his scenes, and it doesn't ever work, because you can't just throw some ellipses among a bunch of sentence fragments and expect the scene to be tense if it's boring and the narrative is unimaginative. No amount of punctuation or random italics will fix that, and scene jumping every page or two doesn't make it seem more exciting. There's a lot of 'ramble, antecedent, start new paragraph just to clarify the antecedent' going on, too, which might have worked to add some punch but is used so often that it ends up feeling like you're being pawed at ineffectually until the chapter closes and the POV changes. I checked out around chapter six.
